Speed Limit Device Cannot Damage Vehicle Engines – FRSC

The Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, began enforcement of the installation of speed limit devices in vehicles operating commuter services and haulage from October 1 and already those against it are spreading rumours that the devices affect the life span of Vehicle engines. However, the Commission has debunked such claims.
The public education officer of Plateau State sector of the FRSC, Andrew Bala, in a phone interview with Premium Times, said the device has no negative effect on vehicles.
“Their claims is laughable. You and I know that speed kills not just occupants of a car, the engine is also affected. So how can speed limit device reduce the life span of an engine?
“The device is just to control speed, since most commercial drivers refuse to control their speed while driving”, he said.
Mr. Bala also denied the allegation by NURTW that FRSC had not carried out adequate sensitization campaign on the device.
“We have adequately sensitized the public. We held several campaigns, we told them the benefits and they accepted,” he said.
He said the FRSC is not responsible for installing the device in commercial vehicles, but is only enforcing compliance with the rule. According to Mr. Bala, the commission has licensed about 45 vendors to install the device.
Mr. Bala said the vendors have commenced installation of the device in registered commercial vehicles within Plateau state.
He said despite commencing enforcement of the rule, the FRSC was still going on with enlightenment campaigns on the benefits of the device.
