Police In Australia Add BMW i8 To Their Fleet

According to The Southland Times, Australian police in New South Wales have added a BMW i8 to their fleet. The German Hybrid machine is powered by a compact 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo engine paired with an electric motor to produce 266kW and 570Nm of performance and consumes just 2.1 litres per 100km, making it the most fuel efficient car on their force.
To my dismay, the BMW won't be used for high-speed pursuits. Instead it will be part of the Rose Bay Local Area Command's community engagement programs, using the head-turning looks of the car to start conversations with members of the public at various events over the next six months.
Rose Bay Police Commander, Superintendent Bradley Hodder, stressed that the deal is a commercial arrangement between the Rose Bay Chamber of Commerce and the BMW Sydney dealership, with no tax payer money being used for the i8.
The BMW is the latest in a long line of exotic cars to be used by NSW Police for similar roles. Previous cars have included the McLaren 650S, Volvo S60 Polestar, Jaguar XF, Audi RS4 and S7 Sportback, Porsche 911 and Panamera, Lexus RC F and Aston Martin Vanquish.
