461 People Lost Their Lives In Road Crashes During The Festive Period – FRSC

Last Thursday in Abuja, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) released its statistics showing that 461 persons died in road crashes  that occurred in different parts of Nigeria between 19th December 2016 and January 15th 2017.

The Corps Marshal, Mr Boboye Oyeyemi, who disclosed this while briefing newsmen on the outcome of the 2016 end of year special patrol undertaken by the corps within the period said that a total of 790 road crashes involving 6,069 persons occurred nationwide in the period under review. Out of these crashes 2,895 victims were injured, while 2,713 were rescued unhurt.

Giving more details, he said that these crashes involved 1,222 vehicles, comprising of 521 cars, 250 buses, 190 motorcycles and 261 others.

On road traffic offences, a total of 29,961 persons were apprehended for various road traffic offences of which 2,899 were arraigned in mobile courts and 2,643 or 91 per cent were convicted. Eight of the convicted offenders were imprisoned while 248, representing 8.6 per cent were discharged and acquitted.

In a related development, Oyeyemi said 63 officials of the corps were sacked over corruption-related offences in 2016.
